This year, I joined a library!

Before I talk about joining the library, I want to mention that right this moment my friend Michael Atkinson's book CATRINA IN SPACE, which I read, loved and reviewed here, is available in eBook format free. If you want very silly yet clever entertainment in a sci-fi sort of way, check out this link to get your free e-copy on Amazon!

Right, now moving on to the point of this post: "This year, I joined a library!" This may seem a strange statement coming from a librarian, but there you have it. I joined a public library out of the desperate need to stop buying so many books, and here's why I am so desperate:

A rather old bookshelf literally sags under the weight of (some of) my TBR list.

A rather new bookshelf harbours books I read in 2012, 2011, and some books read years ago...and also at the top is my "TBRRN" shelf - i.e. "to be read right now"

This third bookcase, also rather old (i.e. from the late 80s or early 90s) harbours yet more books I've read in the far distant past (or in some cases, re-read quite recently)

So yes, I joined a library, not just 'cause I wanted a break from breaking the bank on Book Depository (which really I should refer to as my preccciouuuuussss 'cause it is rather addictive!), but also because I have no room for new books!

It's shameful, really, that it's taken me this long (though I did belong to the public library I worked at back in 2008 for a couple of months). But maybe it's the same as how this hairdresser chick I met recently sometimes doesn't wash her own hair for two weeks at a time

  1. I can see why a library membership might be a good idea for you. Your poor, sagging bookshelves! :-)

  2. I read the best home decorating tip ever recently: If all your books are aligned well, nothing else matters. I subscribe to that philosophy. I adore libraries, I practically live in the State Library of Q'ld, my favourite place to write/teach English. What could be better.
Thanks for the free download thumbs up. I love to read ebooks, but give me print any day!!! Just buy another bookshelf.

  5. Congratulations! I would like to join a library too, if only there was one near the dragon cave. I inherited one, though. :D

  6. My shelves look like that AND I have 9 pages of unread books in the index of my e-reader. I'm hopeless. I joined the public library this year as well and it has saved me a ton of dough, most of which I spent when the library had their semi-annual sale...books for only $1.00!

    Twice as nice!

  7. I have a membership at my local public library, but I never go because someone has to, you know, take me. -.-

Thanks for the heads up about Michael's book. I just got a Kindle and this will be a nice addition.

Also, just noticed your new background. I like it.

  12. That's a ton (maybe literally?) of books! lol I honestly wish every writer would join a library, just as a show of solidarity. Most of our libraries here even 'lend' eBooks now, so think of it as a free version of the Amazon Kindle Lending Library. :-)

Hope your '13 is fantastic and that you get a lot of use out of your new membership (looks like that won't be a problem at al :),

  13. Yes - it is a wonderful addiction to have - except the whole brake the bank stuff. A couple of years ago I gave 10 totes of books to goodwill and I still have a TON in other totes and on the shelves.

I got your card - so beautiful- and Hex Hall in the mail. YaY!

  15. My wife is so thankful I now read mostly eBooks on my tablet. When we moved to our current house a few years ago, my books alone required ::mumble mumble:: trips to get them all. (Yeah, not saying how many. It's embarrassing.)

  16. I tried getting a job at my public library several years ago. I didn't get the job, but I recall that the application was all about what I enjoyed reading. I just knew I would be a shoe-in for the job. I was so disappointed I didn't get it.

I've got a single TBR bookshelf - but my pile has spilled over into another one that I have downstairs. It is rather sad.

  17. I love love love books! Just looking at your bookshelves makes me happy! :) I do not utilize the local library for my own reading, simply because I forget to return the books and then they charge me a bunch of money in late fees.

But the hairdresser who doesn't wash her hair regularly? ICK! Gross! Blech. Two weeks without washing is DIRTY business.

  18. I work at a storage facility and we get our own storage units which I think all of you can guess what my TBR book shelves look like. Im not yet certified as a horder so I better get to reading. Hey Trish, when did you start a blog?

  19. I joined a Library for the first time since I was ten, last year. I did it so I could rent books on my Nook, but the wait list is SO LONG for all the books I want to read... I just can't wait ;) haha.

    Happy New Year!
